Hot dogs have been an American favorite for generations. They are a quick and tasty item that can be prepared as a base dish for a cheap dinner. Unfortunately they are not very healthy and are loaded with questionable ingredients and preservatives. For those that want to enjoy the benefits of the traditional hot dog without the downside; above is a simple hot dog recipe that is a quick and inexpensive way to make them at home from scratch.
- 1/2 pound ground beef
- 1/2 pound ground veal
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 tsp light corn syrup
- 1/4 tsp liquid smoke
- 1/4 cup minced onion
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 1.5 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp dried mustard
- 1/2 tsp prepared coarse mustard
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp mace
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
Below are a couple of modifications I would personally make to the hot dog recipe.
- Use pork instead of veal
- Nutmeg can be used instead of mace
- I would smoke them instead of using the liquid smoke.
- Smoked Paprika could be used if you do not have a smoker
- Can substitute chicken or turkey for a healthier option if you have dietary restrictions that require it.
